Merit, or good fortune, is the positive energy that results from virtuous actions. According to Buddha, merit creates uplift in our mind and inner verve -- or wealth -- that supports our physical and mental well-being. Buddha also says that even to fulfill worldly aims requires merit, so how much more necessary is merit to fulfill our spiritual hopes?
When we find ourselves glum and stuck in general, meeting with obstacles in our meditation practice or endless challenges in our daily life, it can be an indication of a lack of merit. The holiday season is a time when we naturally engage in wonderful other-centered actions, such as giving and rejoicing. With just a bit of mindfulness and very little extra effort, we can merrily make these actions a powerful practice of merit making, and as a result experience all the greatness that goodness brings.
