No One Will be Turned Away Due to Lack of Funds

We are charging for this series in the hope that we can stay afloat during the COVID-19 closure and continue to provide classes and services to our community in Long Island. Please contact Lynda Rice at welcome@kmcli.org if you’d like to pay a different amount.

Building a Bodhisattva World

Our world needs more compassionate, virtuous, kind and loving human beings who possess wisdom and a wish to become enlightened for the benefit of all. This is the definition of a Bodhisattva! Join us for this special four-week series of creative kids meditation classes in October with guest teacher Naimah Hassan where we use our imaginations to turn ourselves into “Bodhisattva executives,” and set out to create products that will support people in their day-to-day lives. Each week, there will be meditation, theater games, brainstorming and writing as we set out to achieve our aim. Our series will end on Halloween (Sat, Oct 31), so students will be encouraged to come to class in costume on the final day as they give their final “product pitches!”

Students must have the Zoom video-conferencing client/app installed on their computer or device. The recurring Zoom link will be emailed out to all registrants in advance of the first class. Please be prepared at home with a computer, paper, pen, and supplies for making a product.

Series Outline

Aim: How do you create a product that can support people in their day-to-day lives?

Each class will consist of the following:

  1. Breathing meditation 1-3 minutes
  2. Put on creative object
  3. Warm-up/theater game
Process:
1. Students are no longer merely students. They are now top-notch, highly successful advertising “Bodhisattva executives.” Their mission: Create a product that can help/support/improve the lives of people in the world.

2. Students will be asked to share examples of commercials, ads, billboards etc., that they remember and will discuss a few examples.
(For those students who don’t watch TV, we’ll talk about different marketing campaigns they have seen or heard about in other places). Example: A food truck, did the images make you hungry? A story window display, did the items in the window draw you in?

3. Students will be asked to write down challenging situations they know people are dealing with that they would want to help them with.

4.  Brainstorming session: Once students have come up with a challenging situation they must now think about the following:

  • The product they can create to assist the people they’re thinking about
  • Type of commercial
  • Style in which they want to present their commercial in

5. We’ll go over what students should be working on each week:

  • Choosing the type of commercial they want to present
  • What is the product going to look like?
  • Who is their target audience?

This series will be a collaborative endeavor with students and teachers helping one another and working together!
