About Us

Our Tradition, Teacher, and Staff

THANK YOU FOR VISITING US!

Kadampa Meditation Center Long Island (KMC-LI) is a peaceful place of refuge and spiritual encouragement in the heart of Huntington with a branch location in Port Jefferson. Inspired by the books and teachings of modern-day Kadampa Buddhist master, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, we present meditation and the teachings of Buddha in an accessible manner that can easily be understood and integrated into our modern lives. The center is run by volunteers and together we’ve created a friendly, compassionate and engaged community.

CLASSES FOR NEWCOMERS

Our general program classes are open to all. They begin with a guided meditation, followed by some practical wisdom from Buddha’s teachings to help us with the challenges of daily life. Questions are welcomed, and the class concludes with another guided meditation, helping us to take to heart any insight, inspiration, or advice we wish to apply.

Sunday is family day at KMC-LI Huntington. We offer a Clarity of Mind meditation class from 10-10:45am, followed by our main general program class and meditation taught by our Resident Teacher from 11:30am-1pm in the main meditation room. Classes for children are taught at the same time in a smaller meditation room and everyone comes together at the end for light refreshments.

THREE LEVELS OF ENGAGEMENT

KMC-LI offers three different programs created by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso: the General Program (GP) which is open to everyone, the Foundation Program (FP) for those who wish to gain deeper understanding and meditative experience of Buddha’s teachings, and the Teacher Training Program (TTP), the most in-depth and comprehensive program for those who wish to become qualified Buddhist meditation teachers.

BOOKS WE RECOMMEND FOR NEWCOMERS

KMC-LI’s Bookstore and Gift Shop is an excellent resource for books on Buddhism, guided meditation CDs, and other items to support a meditation practice, as well as gifts for friends and family.

OUR AFFILIATION

Kadampa Meditation Center Long Island is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT), an International Union of Kadampa Buddhist Centers. There are more than 1,200 centers worldwide. We often gather as a family at both Kadampa Meditation Center New York in Glen Spey, home of our east coast national Temple, for festivals, special courses, and retreats – and at KMC New York City.

SHARE YOUR TALENTS – JOIN OUR COMMUNITY OF VOLUNTEERS

KMC-LI is run by volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to share your talents or interests, meet new people, and help the center flourish. It doesn’t matter how small the task may seem, each contribution of time is immensely meaningful and helps others to find peace in this busy, noisy world. Fill out the form on our Volunteer page if you’re interested in helping out.

MEMBERSHIP

If you find benefit from the teachings and the community at KMC Long Island, please consider joining us as a supporting member. KMC-LI and the programs it offers are made possible through the support of its members. As an entirely locally-supported non-profit organization, we depend on supporting memberships and donations to be able to maintain our peaceful meditation spaces and offer so many classes, workshops and retreats. Membership is tax deductible. If you attend the center and/or branch classes regularly, your membership will represent a savings over pay-as-you-go.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU SOON!
