Taking Precepts is a way of learning to lead a kind and ethical Buddhist life and it is a way of acquainting ourselves with the practice of moral discipline which helps us avoid the causes of suffering. When we take precepts, we promise to refrain from certain negative actions for a 24-hour period and we promise to eat only one meal at midday. We then lead our life that day with our precepts vows held firmly in our hearts. Once we have received the precepts from a qualified preceptor, we can take them as often as we wish. Through this practice we can purify negativity and create the causes for happiness in the future. For more information about taking precepts, see the New Kadampa Tradition’s Taking Precepts page.
