Sundays in June 2017
We’re not as helpless as we might think when it comes to assisting others. Buddha defined love as “the wish for another to be happy.” If we develop this “other-centered” mind, we will be free from the sufferings of our own self-cherishing and self-grasping and be able to bring real happiness and inner peace to others. This is why Buddha proclaimed love to be “the great protector.” If we sit still with this notion in meditation and really contemplate how love has the power to provide protection, we gradually come to realize that the only way for us to experience love is to give love freely to others. Through cultivating this powerful state of mind, we can receive that which we are seeking ourselves; we will become someone who embodies love fully, thus reaping the benefit of all of its good qualities. We will want to radiate love out to others, and become a pure being with pure intentions who never wishes to harm another living being. Through our example, we’ll become an inspiration for others to emulate, and a source of refuge for others experiencing both mental and physical difficulties. Through becoming familiar with Buddha’s teachings on affectionate love, cherishing love, wishing love and ultimately great compassion and bodhichitta, we’ll connect to the extraordinary blessings of enlightened beings and be propelled to superior states of mind that only lead to happiness and contentment. With a mind filled with love, we’ll find it difficult to recall our former selves who once felt limited by loneliness, a fear of not being loved, a fear of not being able to protect our loved ones from aging, sickness or death, or the helpless sense of fear we once felt about being unable to make a difference in a world we felt was doomed for self-destruction. By making a decision to become love itself, we become the change we want to see in the world.
